Rabbit Seizures

Question
Our rabbit has been doing this weird nodding of his head to the left. It started the other day when he started dragging his left foot and his head was nodding to the left. It lasted about 15 seconds and it seemed like he was having a seizure. It's happened a few times now. He will go into it and it will last a few second and then he is fine. What could this be?

Answer
Dear Christy,

Your bunny's tendency to have these problems on one side of the body suggests the possibility of a stroke.  There are other things that can cause neurological problems, such as E. cuniculi and terminal renal disease.  But in any case, I would get bun to an experienced rabbit vet NOW:

for bloodwork and full evaluation of what's going on.  There could be any number of things responsible for these types of signs, from an intracranial abscess or tumor to parasites such as E. cuniculi or even the dreaded roundworm, Baylisascaris procyoni.  I hope it's none of those.  But only a good rabbit vet will be able to tell you by examining your bunny in person and making a diagnosis.

I hope this helps.
