Rabbit droppings & urine in carpet

Question
Hi, I have two domestic bunnies.  Two months ago I got another rabbit to keep my first bunny company.  She does not poop in the litter box.  I constantly vacume daily and am going to buy a carpet shampooer.  Any recommendations on cleaning my carpet there is some urine in two areas that I clean with Resolve.  Also, I have crated my new rabbit to encourage pooping in the litter box but she doesn't get it.  Any advice would be great.

Thank You,
Laura Kyburz

Answer
Dear Laura,

Boy, if you find a way to solve this problem, I'm all ears.  We have a few bunnies who just don't *get* the litterbox thing, and we are constantly cleaning up after them.  Fortunately, we tiled the whole house, knowing this would be the best way to keep things clean.  But if you don't have that option, then the best way to clean up the mess is:

1.  Douse affected carpet spots with white vinegar
2.  Allow to sit for a few minutes
3.  Vacuum out with wet/dry shop vac until as dry as possible
4.  Rinse area with clean water
5.  Again, vacuum to as dry as possible
6.  Allow to dry overnight

If the smell persists, work baking soda into the spot, let it sit overnight, and then vaccuum.  It's not perfect, but it can help.

If the smell is really bad, then timsen (you can get this at a feed store) supposedly will kill just about *any* odor.

Then, when you've finally had it, take up the carpet and put down tile. Provide cotton, traction-backed runners for the bunnies that can be thrown in the wash when soiled. You'll wonder why you waited so long.  :)

Hope this helps.
