Determine Sex of a Rabbit

Question
I received 2 dwarf rabbits and I was told that they were both females.  When cleaning the cage they came in contact and one started humping (if you will) the other one.  Does this mean they the one is a male?  How can we tell what sex they are?

Answer
Hi,

no females will mount males or females.  Males will mount males or females.  It is a dominance issue.

To know for sure, I'd just take them in to your good, regular rabbit vet.  They can show you how to safely sex a rabbit (the proper hold and what to look for).  If you don't have a good rabbit vet, go to:

www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

and find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet near you.

I'd take them in anyway because the vet may be able to, along with if you know approximately how old they are) if they are sexually mature.  Generally mounting behavior indicates they are.

If so, you will want to get them checked out and start thinking about getting them spayed.  It will basically double their lifespans because about 85% of unspayed female rabbits will die from uterine cancer before age 6.  A spayed female will live 10-12 years as an indoor house rabbit.  Also it will cut down on her cage aggression (females start defending their cage when they are in it once sexually mature - go after hands reaching in).  So it would be good for you to seriously consider this.
