potbelly pig labor

Question
I have a potbelly pig who started having her babies yesterday while I was away from home. When I returned I noticed she had had two babies, one was dead and the other was doing fine. We got her in her pen thinking she might need a place where she can be alone. We went back out there once last night and once this morning and she hasn't had anymore babies. She has had a litter before but she had eight that time. She isn't acting like she is bothered or hurting. But I didn't know if that is normal for them to only have two or maybe she just isn't finished.

Answer
Two piglets is a small litter, but not unheard of.

Pigs have three stages of labor. A day or two before labor begins, a sow usually begins nesting. During the first stage of labor, she will keep trying to go potty. This stage usually lasts between 8 and 24 hours.

The second stage is the actual birth of the piglets. The sow may have visible contractions. Piglets are usually born between 5 and 60 minutes apart, but they may come much quicker. Pieces of the placenta may come out with the piglets.

In the third stage, the placenta or its remains are expelled.

If she is eating, peeing, pooping and nursing the baby, everything is probably ok. Make sure she gets plenty of nutrition, it's ok to mix starter pellets with her food, and ok to let the baby taste her food if he wants to.
