Question

Bentley
Hello, my name is chanel and  i have a 3 month old neutered potbelly pig  named Bentley. i got him from  weweeweee pot belly pigs. My  questions are  we feed  Bentley  veggies  that we warm up  in hot water  about a cup some  fruit  and tofu and some  hard boiled eggs   as we do not  have miniature  pot belly  food where i live is he getting everything he  need in this?

my other question is  he refuses to drink water  he has no interest in  it and it worries me as they say all pigs drink lots of water is his normal? we do put a little water in with his food  and he will  drink a bit of it.

Its  is first winter and we tried coats and  sweaters but  he will not  go outside and  he hates going for walks now is their anyway  to get him to go for walks and want to go and not end up me carrying him for the walk? he is an indoor pig.

and  he gets mean  over food  hw do i correct this?

Answer
Bently isn't getting the nutrition he needs from his diet. He will be able to handle the cold better when he gets proper nutrition.

If mini pig food is not available, look for another, similar food. Some options are pelleted horse chow (not sweet feed), or hog chow, or a multi-animal livestock feed. Avoid feeds for chickens or other poultry. Look for something that is low in fat and protein. Another possibility is ordering the food from the internet or mail order. First, make sure his water smells and tastes ok. Sometimes when water sits in a bowl for awhile, it starts to take on the taste and smell of the container. If this is happening, get a new water bowl. If the water is OK, add a little bit of real fruit juice (not flavored punch), about 1/8 c juice to 1 c water, to encourage him to drink.

Piglets fight with each other over food. Bently sees you as his family, and he isn't getting enough nutrition, so he instinctively fights even harder over the food he does get. So, the problem has two parts, poor nutrition and bad behavior.

Start by feeding him all the veggies he can eat for a couple of days. He still won't be getting quite enough nutrition, but he will feel better. Continue to let him continue to eat all the vegetables he wants until you can get pig food. But feed him every bite by hand. All food must come from you, and Bently must take each bite gently. If he gets snappy, tell him NO, and push his snout to one side, then offer the food again.
