pig and itching and scratching

Question
Hi - We are the owners of a piggy for four weeks now.  She was precious when we first received her but quickly after we all began itching!  It's horrible.  We put seven dust on her three times, washed the bedding, etc.  I checked out a miniature pig care book from the library and began surfing the web for info about the itching.  I quickly learned about Ivomec and Ivermectin.  I realize that's what we need - however - the Ivermectin cream is sold for horses!  1500 lb horses!  How much of the Ivermectin cream do I give my little 8 lb piggy?  Also, how do we get rid of the itching we have.  Thanks so much!!  Your website is great and helpful.  DMR

Answer
Hello,
You need to purchase Ivomec .27% for your piglet.
You can purchase it at Jeffers online.
You need to administer it orally either over a very small amount of feed or squirt directly into the mouth.
You give 1/2 cc per 10 lbs.  As it is OK to overdose a small amount I would give 1/2 cc.
Administer again in 10 days.
You should ask your doctor what to use for your itching.
I probably wouldn't handle the piglet a lot until both you and she has had time to get rid of the  mites.
Also...wash your hands very well after you do handle her.
Once you have treated both her and you you should be fine and not get reinfected.
Hope this helps!
Take care,Patty
