Mini Pig shakes

Question
We have a mini pig, approximately 20 pounds and 6 months old, we have noticed she gets a whole body tremble/seizure after she eats.  She is fed twice a day and this usually only happens after dinner feeding, usually within 20-30 minutes or right after she poops.  It lasts for about a half hour, it is almost like she has the chills, I am certain she is not cold.  Any suggestions?  She appears healthy, energetic, other than that.  She does drink much more than her older brother who we have had for 2 years.  He is about 70 pounds and she outdrinks him 2 to 1.  We have talked to our vet and she is not sure.  THanks

Answer
I am not a veterinarian and can not make a medical diagnosis or prescribe treatment over the internet.

What your pig is doing is not normal. If it happened only after eating, it could be a blood sugar issue. If it happened only after pooping, I'd think intestinal. Put the two together, and it is baffling.

Piggy might need some bloodwork to figure out what is happening, and even that may be inconclusive.

I would try giving her a warm blanket to lay on when she gets the shakes. Or, toss a couple of old towels in the dryer to get them toasty warm for her. Of course, this will treat the symptom only and not the root cause of the problem.

If your vet is willing, there are several expert veterinarians who will work with other vets over the phone. Dr Wilburs at Quakertown, PA is one, you can find his info under Veterinarians at www.farec.org
