QuestionHi,
I have a tiny mini pig ready to give birth this month. With the help of my naghber, whom has experience with large pigs, i built her a birthing pen. the problem is that I'm new to this so I am not sure what to do as she's giving birth. she had a many litters before we got her and had no problems. However she had a litter with us in the beginning of April and during the night she gave birth to four all of whom died. this time i want to do it right, with no mistakes.
whatever advice you could give me would be great.
Thank you,
Rebecca
AnswerBabies need a lot of warmth. If the barn or birthing area isn't warm, set up a "creep area", a small sectioned off area where only the babies can go, and put heating pads or lamps there to create a really warm spot.
If Momma pig has had babies that survived before, if she's kept warm, has a nice secure place to birth with plenty of bedding and plenty of food, everything should go ok this time.
The book Veterinary Care of Pot-Bellied Pigs by Lorrie Boldrick (Lorrie Blackburn) has several chapters devoted to pot-bellied pig pregnancy, birthing, and pediatrics. You can probably find it on Amazon.com
