Question
We have a 4 month old male pbp and we are working on the potty thing but he has accidents behind the couch.  If we don't see him sneak back there thats where he will go instead of the back room. My question is what is the best product to use for the smell in the carpet and maybe something where he wont know he has been there before.
Thanks

Answer
Any name-brand product with enzymes designed to remove urine odor from carpet will work. Wal-Mart and Target carry a couple of different products, or you can get one from Heartland; it's the second item down on the page here: http://healthypigs.easystorecreator.com/items/odor-control-items/list.htm?1=1

Eliminating the odor is only part of the solution. He goes behind the couch because he needs to go and it's convenient. At age 4 months, he doesn't have a lot of "advance warning" about the need to potty, and it's difficult for him to "hold it" long enough to get to the right spot. Plus, pigs are smart and have long memories. Even when the odor is eliminated he will still remember that spot as a "potty spot".

The most important step it to take him to his litter box on a frequent, steady schedule, and make sure he actually potties. Do not let him leave the litter box area until he's actually pottied. Take him often enough so that he is so "empty" he doesn't have the urge to potty anywhere else. Make him potty immediately on waking up in the morning and every nap, before AND after every meal, before AND after every training session, or every two hours during the day. In other words, if he's been up for 2 hours, take him to the potty box no matter what.

If he will be left alone without supervision, confine him to a smaller area near his box. DO NOT leave him alone in the room with the problem spot no matter what!! It will be at least 6 months before he "forgets" that he likes to potty back there, so this rule will have to stay in place for a long time.

Block his access to the problem spot behind the couch, and put something there that makes noise if he tries to get to the potty spot, so you can stop him before he "does the deed". Cardboard boxes with rocks and jingle balls will make it harder for him to get back there and the jingles alert you that he's trying.

If re-arranging the furniture is possible, that will be a big help. Leave his favorite spot exposed so you can see him and stop him. Leave a treat or two there on occasion so he begins to associate that spot with food instead of potty. Another possibility is to put something really big and heavy that he could never move on that spot. Again, leave a treat or two on the floor around it so that he associates that room with food.
