Question
I have a young male rat (about 5 months old) whose been having a bout of diarrhea. He acts 100% normal (running around, climbing, eating and drinking well) and his temperment hasn't changhed, but he's been having bowel issues for over a week. He gets few fresh greens, his breathing is fine, and his appearance is otherwise normal (apart from a bit of a lack-luster coat) He isn't allowed to run free, so I'm certain he didn't get into anything, and apart from diarrhea and dull fur, he seems fine; what could be the problem?

Answer
Hello Machelle,
I would stop feeding him the fresh greens for right now until his diarrhea problem is solved. Sometimes too much fressh veggies and greens can cause diarrhea. There are a few home remedies that you can try, one is called acidophilus+ and some pet stores may carry it. I know www.drsfostersmith.com carries it and you can also try and give your rat some plain yogurt. These two things are supposed to help with diarrhea. I would try get your rat to a vet as having diarrhea for a week isn't good at all. The best ooption really is to find a vet to seek antibiotics or something to help with the digestive system. Good luck and keep me posted.
