Question
Hello Sandra
I have 2 7 month old female rats Itsy and Bitsy,I am having alot of problems with bitsy ever since i got her she has bitten me. I have had them 3 months now i got them from a pet shop Bitsy had not been handled much but i thought in time she would come around, she has improved alot over the last few months i can handle her now i can go a few days without a bite but then she will just bite me an example tonight i got her out of her cage no problem i handled the 2 of them for about an hour then placed them back into there cage, after about an hour i thought id get her out again i picked her up from the cage she went down my sweat shirt as she normally does and down my sleeve and once she reached the end where the palm of my hand is she bite me hard and made a hole im really puzzled as to why was it her way of saying ive had enough handling tonight,is there a chance she will always do this. How do i know when its the right time to handle her i really don't know what to do i have tried everything that has been suggested.

Answer
Rats vary in tempers and usually it has a lot to do with their genetic background. If you have tried every re-direct and re-training method, you may just have to accept that this is Bitsy. That she simply does this and sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to it. Try to look for signs or indications she's going to bite; tenseness in the body or a shrinking/drawing back as you reach for her. If she displays this; stop and let her relax before proceeding.. she may be trying to tell you in her own way when she doesn't want to be handled. If you can live with it and avoid being bitten, I suggest giving it a shot.

Sorry to hear of the troubles! :/

Good luck.
