Question
so we were trying to introduce my 8 week old puppy with one of my rats and my rat bit my boyfriend instead of the dog on accident and it started bleeding. so what i want to ask is can he catch anything from our rat even though it lives in our home and is domestic? because his mom freaked us out and looked up stuff on the internet and told us he could catch something.

Also, when would you suggest we introduce our puppy and our rats to each other or even let them be around each other? when he stops teething?

Answer
Nope, he won't catch anything. Absolute worst case scenario is that if you don't keep it clean it could potentially become infected, and if the rat bit down in the right place (right over a joint), that infection could get into the joint/bone and marrow, and that would be extremely problematic. Right now, keeping ANY type of wound clean is positively crucial due to the scare of MRSA, but that isn't a rat-specific thing.

There's potential for something called 'rat bite fever' but its EXTREMELY rare and I personally have never heard of a case of it, simply read case studies online.

As for the puppy.. keep in mind that dogs are predators and rats are prey. You can have the dog and the rats around each other provided they are ALWAYS 100% supervised and that the puppy is never, ever given a chance to physically harm the rat. The younger you start this training, the better. I prefer to teach my dogs and cats to just stay AWAY from the rats rather than trying to insist they become friends. Much easier.
