Mycoplasma - Zoonotic potential?

Question
I'm 6 weeks pregnant and my 2 rats have recently been diagnosed with suspected mycoplasma. They are being treated with antibiotics. My vet is unsure as to weather it could harm my unborn baby. Is it possible, and even if it's not mycoplasma is there a chance that this infection, whatever it is, could be zoonotic.

Answer
Hi Kate

Your fine.  The myco that the rats get cannot in any way be passed to us

Both experts on here that are breeders also have a babies and young children and took care of their rats their entire pregnancy and can also back me up that its fine.

I promise you that there is nothing your rats can give you or your unborn baby, even at his or her most delicate stage of development which is the first trimester.  In fact, the family pet cat is the one to worry about rather than the rats since they can harbor toxoplasmosis, which can be devastating to the unborn baby.

The only thing we can pass to our rats and they can pass to us is ringworm, which is of course not a worm but a fungus, like athletes foot, and some experts say pink eye can be passed back and forth too, but I have never seen that happen so I thought I would mention that just in case. Other than that, nothing else. Even if the rats have mites and lice they are specie specific and in fact, their lice is not even like that of human lice that fly and have wing while the rat louse doesnt have wings nor do they jump.

Hope this makes you feel better. I cross my heart. I would never tell you this if I wasnt so absolutely positive about it and I would never ever put your unborn baby at risk.  I am a mom myself (of young adult children) and I know the love we have for our baby and how worried we are about them so again, I promise you that the rats are safe to be around and nothing they have will hurt you or the baby in any way.

Hope this helps!
