Cage for pet male rats

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I may be rescuing two male rats. I have a rat cage that I kept two females in with 1/2 inch spacing between the wires. I have a nicer ferret cage, but it has 1 inch spacing between the wires. Is the 1 inch spacing okay since the boys are so much bigger than the girls?

ANSWER: Yes, as long as they are adult size.  My three baby boys can fit through my ferret nation cage bars still but they are 14 weeks old. My other males lived in it fine but they were adults.

How old are the boys your rescuing?

QUESTION: They are two years old.

Answer
Oh, they should fit fine.  Adult males usually have broad shoulders and...well....fat bellies....LOL.....chances are they should not be able to get out.  However, you can always put hardware cloth up if they should be able to squeeze through. The hardware cloth is a life saver. I put it on my ferret nation cage. It comes in a roll, looks like a metal screen in a way, and you can attach it to the cage.  It works like a charm!
