Mammary Tumor?

Question

Domino's Abdomen
My female rat Domino is a little over one and a half years old. About three months ago I discovered a small lump just beside her hind leg when she was standing. I have kept an eye on it for the past couple of months and it has tripled in size.
I have flipped her on her back and placed two fingers on either side of the lump and then moved it from side to side, it does not seem to be too deep, and actually hangs when she walks. It doesn't seem to cause her any pain, but seems to be getting in the way lately. She still seems as energetic as ever, if not more so since she finally got a cagemate about a month ago.
I am positive that she needs to go to the vet but since money is tight I was hoping for some kind of idea of what to expect.
I live in a very small town but am somehow lucky enough to have a vet nearby that treats rats, she doesn't specialize in them but Domino has been to her once as well as my other rat Cheerio, both for minor things. BUT this feels like a big thing to me, and I value second opinions on big things! Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you so much for your time and this invaluable service.

Answer

That is absolutely, 100% without a doubt in my mind a bonafide, certified, petrified (ok well that doesnt really apply here but it rhymed!:) mammary tumor!  My humor is to put you at ease since I am giving to you what you may consider a rather negative diagnosis.

The good news is this:
They are 100% operable, but this depends on the skill of the surgeon. Treating rats medically does not mean that the vet is capable of performing a flawless operation. Flawless may be expecting too much from anybody, so lets just opt for surgery with a successful outcome.
80% of vets that treat rats really shouldnt, so before you allow her to operate, I would check out my website, sandyscrittercity.com and refer to the topic about Surgery in rats. I have a check list to use as reference.
