QuestionQUESTION: I saw this cage on petsmart.com and was wondering if it would be large enough for two male rats.
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753300&lmdn=Pet+Type
It got pretty good reviews and people mentioned that they used it for two rats, but would it be big enough for two males? If it is definitely too small, I plan on getting the Rat Manor cage from PetCo.

It is obviously better in terms of size and construction, but is a lot more expensive (at $80 on sale). Since I want to have money left for food/toys/bedding/etc, would getting the rat manor be a better investment in the long run (would 2 males grow out of the smaller one and need an upgrade?) or would the smaller one be good enough for two? I know that the more space the better, but if it is big enough then there is not as much of a reason to pay more.
Also, if you have any reccomendations for cages in the $75-80 and below range, It would be appreciated! I want to make sure I'm getting the best possible cage for the ratties!
Thanks!
Caroline
Cage from Martins cage
ANSWER: CAGE CALCULATOR
http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/information/guides/cagecalculator/
Try the cage calculator above. I checked it out and the first one fits just 2 rats, which means its a tight fit for two males. You want to house 2 rats in a cage that can fit at least 3 comfortably and so on.
The second one is nice, but the shelves are pretty high. I would lower them (it looks like you can lower them) and the shelves are just small balconies so you have no place to put stuff and they wont want to hang out in the litter area.
To be totally honest, the better cages have the full shelves rather than half shelves unless your super creative and plan on hanging hammocks and stuff all over the place.
Have you checked out Martins cages?
I LOVE the cage I have pictured. You can get it from Martins and it fits three rats and has two balconies and a full middle shelf too.
Here is the URL for that cage and others:

QUESTION: Since cages are measured in LengthXWidthXHeight and the cage calculator uses WidthXDepthXHeight, where do I put each measurement? (does L=Depth or height?, etc) Also, is the cage you pictured the Rat Tower? I notice that they are offered in both galvanized and powder coated, and i have heard powder coating is better, but what does it do?
Thanks for the reccomendations!
AnswerI was confused on that too so I finally figured it out:
For the smaller cage you first showed me, I put it like this:
Width 24.5
depth 12.5
height 24.5
it says it fits two rats, which I figured soon as I saw it. Their depth is the smallest number.
You want powder coated too because galvanized is porous and holds the urine smell. And yes its the rat tower, I think. The r 690? I think.....duh, sorry about that .
