rat hygiene

my partner has had his two pet rats for a year now but has still been unable to potty train them! they are well exercised    and balanced diet and also have free roaming time in the living room when our baby daughter is asleep but lately we have been having terrible insect problems only in our living room. ive tried everything to get rid of the bugs but they keep coming back could this be because they are attracted to the rats, please help im at my wits end. thanks

No, I doubt the insects are coming for the rats alone unless your leaving food down and crumbs are laying around.

Keep in mind any sprays or pesticides used can be fatal to rats so if you spray etc....do not let the rats near the area for several weeks.
