What to expect from a pet rat if her cage mate has died

Question
Gilly is taking her final breathes and I'm very worried about Pinky. I'm not sure how she will react to her pal passing away. They have lived in the same cage for about 2 1/2 years. Can you please tell me what I can expect from her? Will she become depressed? Lonely? Please help.

Answer
Rats bond very closely, so its very likely Pinky will be sad and lonely. Try to give her more attention and lavish her with fun things to do to help her cope with this distressing time. If you feel she would benefit from her, get her an older buddy to hang out with. Given her age, however; she may not take to another cagemate, particularly if they're younger.. so weight it out on what you feel is best for her.

I'm sorry for your loss.
