Tumor has darkened

Question
Dear Sandra,
My rat, Mr. Jingles has had a marble-size tumor just to the right of his penis for about 2 mos.  Although the tumor has not grown in size, it has become very dark and has a foul odor.  Left foot became quite swollen and he suffered paralysis in both rear legs.  He has been drinking a fruit smoothy of fresh fruit and pure acai which has brought l foot back to normal and I swear he has some improved movement in rear legs.  His appetite is very good and he loves my attention but I would like to know if this tumor will break open and what is happening to it with odor and color change.  Jingles is 2 1/2 yrs old.  I understand he will not live much longer but maybe you can tell me what is happening with regard to the tumor changes.  Thank You, Margaret

Answer
Hi Margaret

Sounds like your rats tumor is now losing its blood supply and has turned necrotic.  This is not good. Mr.Jingles needs anitobicocs to help keep the bacterai from going to his blood stream which will cause sepsis. The tumor can open up and drain pus, which will be bloody, green, white or yellow, and the smell will be just awful.  He is an older boy where its a bit more risky for  surgery although I did it on an older rat who was over 3, and she did just well but her healing was slower than ever.  You would need a super skilled vet to remove this tumor and also have him stay for at least 48 hrs at the clinic for strong antibiotic   traetments.    Can you take a photo of this tumor for me and attach it during our follow up?

Is he still energetic?
