Why did my rat die?

my rats nose and paws started to go red and he was not eating, grooming or drinking he started being slow and he started smelling, i asked my carers to ring te vet but they didnt do it and yesterday i found him dead what do you think it could have been?

It is not possible to know from this information. Any rat not eating, drinking, or grooming is extremely, extremely sick. The smelling sounds like infection. The red, if you mean a liquid, might be mucus or blood.
