Question
QUESTION: hi sandra. my rat poke was very fine this afternoon, i left him and his brother and the room downstairs because it was cool there. i brought them back upstairs and after a couple of hours my cousin brought poke downstairs and said he was laying down like a pancake upstairs. i assumed he was a bit warm. i was on my way to get the cage my cousin said he drooled, which was weird. we also noticed he was lethargic, we soaked his tail and wet his back with cool water. he wouldn't even touch his treat or drink. i forced him to drink some pedialite, he didn't strike me as dehydrated i checked the skin. there is no 24 hour vet clinic and i tried calling debbie the rat lady and could not get a hold of her. and what's weird is poke is moving his face and ears while laying down, facial movement is what we're seeing him do he doesn't really do it. he just came around after an hour i think, he's moving a bit now and ate half of his treat. is this just heat exhaustion/stroke? what do you think this is and what should i do?

ANSWER: Its hard to really say what it is without an exam. He may be having little seizures.  How hot did his area get?

You should get him to the vet for a complete check up. Do you have one?

QUESTION: Hi again Sandra...I hope you don't think I'm psycho and anything :p I just wanted to tell you the good news about Pokey, he's acting normal now. He's all hyper and curious again, he was running towards me 30 minutes ago when I crinkled the bag of treats :) He's also eating now. I just wanted to keep you posted. Thanks much for helping out it was much appreciated! :)

Answer
That is good news. I thought about you yesterday because we left for Florida in the morning (I live in NC) and we had a long 12 hour drive to get southern Florida.  I was about to use the lap top (wireless etc...) but I get car sick so I decided not to use it. I felt bad not answering the people that were waiting for a response but here I am now at my Dads house on his computer and I am happy all is well. I brought two of my "special needs rats" with me. One is totally blind and the other is missing an eye and lost his brother a week ago so I didnt want to put him at the vets to be watched....and the blind rat withdrew and hid all day in his house. I brought him in the cage he lives in (we had the entire back seat free since it was just myself and my husband for a change) so we brought two rats and left the other two more healthy rats at home with my son who is 18 and capable of caring for them. Anyhow i was worried that Smudge was getting sick but he is fine today.

If you need anything dont hesitate to write and no  your far from psycho, you love your rats and want them to be OK!!
