Question
i have two male rats approx two years old they are both loosing there fur i can not find anything live on them but they both do a lot of itching

Answer
It's possible it could be lice.  The lice that rats get is very small.  I have had this problem before with my rats before I learned that the pine bedding you buy can carry it. (Recycled newspaper works best in my opinion).  You can however see the egg casings attached to the hair shaft at the base.  They are very tiny still though, so you may need to magnify it to see it.  If you do see the egg casings, then you will need to treat your rats and their environment.  Speak with your veterinarian about which product they would recommend.  I used zodiac powder, but I'm sure there are others.  Never use Frontline!  Mites can also cause itching, and treatments are sometimes similar.  If you cannot find anything on them, then I would take them to your vet.  It's possible that they have an allergy, or something in their environment is bothering them, such as their bedding.
