Rats sore

Question
Ok, so my rat had a small scratch/sore idk what from but it keeps getting worse and now is the size of a dime because she keeps scratching at it and the scab comes off. I dont want it to get worse. We were gonna put some ointment on it but I figured she would just lick it off. My family doesn't have a ton of money to take her to the vet and get her meds so is there a cheap solution (less than $10) or a homemade remedy that could help heal this sore?  Someone on another site suggests I put neosporin on the wound and cover it in bandage. Chances are she will bite off the bandage but at least the ointment will get into her bloodstream. Another suggests we put a cone around her head to prevent her from biting at it.

Answer

Was there a lump under the sore?

Can you take a photo of it and attach it here?  I attached a photo of one of my boys to show you how you can attach them.

As for listening to other people....info varies on the internet, some of it is not so good info and other info is accurate, but its best to contact a professional. I hate to say expert even though this is called all experts because I dont know really if anyone can be an expert in anything, there is always something new to learn everyday. However, being this is what I "do" I think  can help steer you in the right direction.  I would still prefer to see a photo though but either way, I will tell you how to clean it. Just used some saline solution or hibicleanse from the drug store and you can use neosporin. It wont get in the blood stream if she licks it, though, it will just go into their stomach if they lick it.  You can keep the rat busy for about 5 minutes so they ointment absorbs before it gets licked off.   As long as it is non steroid ointment it is fine.  Just stick to neosporin and cleaning the area well.  Dont bandage it,it needs air to help it heal, and dont stress the rat out by trying to put an E collar on her neck. this will freak her out, stress her to no end and she will just end up not healing well because the stress will weaken her immune system and interfere with healing.
