QuestionMy babies are being spayed tomorrow morning and I think the vet removes the ovaries not the whole uterus. Which is best?
AnswerHe is only doing an Ovariectomy which is no good for female rats and here is why: Female rats are prone to uterine tumors and also a very nasty type of infection called pyometra, so the normal routine for a spay is a complete hysterectomy, not a partial.
A vet that understands the common problems intact females have should know to remove the uterus too. Is your vet a certified exotic vet or a vet that sees exotics? Hopefully yes, and hopefully they will stay overnight at least 1 to 2 days too. Please let me know how they do.
Good luck!
