Scabs/Sores all over rat

Question
QUESTION: My rat has scabs and sores all over her neck, shoulders, and back. They're not healing and my other rat doesn't have them at all so I know that it's not mites. She seems to be healthy besides that, except maybe a little on the skinny side while my other rat is chubby. The scabs are about half the size of a pencil eraser.

ANSWER:
Alot of times this is related to diet and high protein levels.
Sometimes it effects only one rat and not the other, but high protein isnt good for the rat, period.

Also, do you notice excessive itching and scratching?

Does she eat pet store food such as the mixes?  Let me know about her diet and we will go from there.

QUESTION: Thank you for answering my question. I haven't noticed her itching much. She eats Reggie Rat mix from the pet store. I think you're right about the protein I have been giving them a lot of meat as treats, I thought that was what they needed, but I will cut way back for sure. Is there something that rats need to eat a lot of, like vegetables or something?

Answer

Her problem is the reggie rat and the diet in general. Even if it is mites, her diet needs changes or this will lead to kidney disease later in life.

Here is some info on her skin problems as well as proper diet.  let me know if you still have more questions. I am here for you and everyone that needs help and will do what I can for you!
