rat medication

Question
two of my rats recently came down with pnemonia. I took them to the vet and they gave me some medication for them. Unfortunately, they passed away before i got a chance to give them the medicine. However, i have two other rats who have mycoplasma, and i was wondering if the medication i was given could help them. Do you think it would be too strong, since it is made to help pnemonia, not mycoplasma? Or do you think it could help lessen some of their mycoplasma symptoms?

Answer
It all depends on what the medication is.  The mycoplasma bacteria has no cell wall, and requires an antibiotic that is made especially for that kind of bacteria.  The most commonly prescribed antibiotics for that are Baytril and Doxycycline.  If it is one of those it would be all right to give it to them, but make sure you use the correct dosage based on their weight.  Also, make sure the medication is not expired (there should be an expiry date on the bottle).

If you let me know what the name of the antibiotic is I can get you the dosage and tell you if it will help them or not and give you some further information.
