Oreo Shaking?

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I have another question about my pet rats behavior. Here's some background on her first: I have a female pet rat named Oreo. She's less then a year old, I got her from Petcetera, she has a 3 level cage, with wood shavings that she can burrow in. I give her a rat food (giving her a full bowl which lasts her a couple days) and we play with her every day for at least 20 minutes.

The behavior I'm talking about is when she looks like she's kinda jolting or twitching forward, without her taking a step forward or back or side to side. Is this because she has extra energy or is this something I should be worried about?

Thanks,
Arden <3

ANSWER: Sounds like hiccups.  Is it like a spasmodic type movement?

QUESTION: I don't think so. It happens at least once a night though. She always sits on the top or middle of the cage when she gets them, should I be worried about her having hiccups? Would it be anything in her diet?

Answer
No it would not be anything to do with diet usually.  Rats do not burp or vomit but can hiccup. Sometimes they hiccup if they have respiratory infections because they gasp with their open mouth and swallow air.

She could also be coughing too, but what you describe sounds more like hiccups than a rat cough.
