rat addiction to eating plastic jugs

i have a rat which got free and ate the handle and some holes
into the top of a la
rge white plastic jug but didnt attempt to eat the contents (olive oil) - is there some ingredient the rat is attracted to and can it harm him?

If he swallowed it, it may cause some problems with his intestines. Did you find chewed up pieces all over the floor etc...that showed he simply gnawed at it but left most of the  contents chewed up all over the place? My rats will gnaw up stuff and leave the contents all over?

As for there being any ingredient that attracts rats to the plastic? Not that I know of, but what attracts them is the ability to gnaw it so easily.
Rats that like to chew will chew anything that they can that is easy to chew.

Its just their nature. Rodent = Rodentia=Gnawing animal and that is one good way to describe our ratties! Gnawing animals!
