Blindness?

Question
Hello,
I've had a male albino rat for 2 years, i imagine he's less than three.  His eye's have started looking milky, like cataracts possibly, or as if there's a translucent film over them.  I know they're more apt to go blind, but what are some ways i could test it?  he still moves around his cage as though he can see, but it culd be habit, and taking him out to wander doesn't really help because i can't tell what he'd be trying to look at.. Any help is greatly appreciated.  also, any tips for lighting, specific food or any tips for things i could do to help him be better would be helpful.  Thanks, Tenah.

Answer
Rats can lose their eyesight as they get older, and albino rats have especially bad eyesight due to their pink eyes.  If something about his eyes has changed it is possible that he has cataracts or an infection or it is simply due to age.  If he is fine otherwise I wouldn't worry too much about it, even a completely blind rat can often get along just fine since most rats have very bad eyesight anyway.  If you are concerned or if you notice any other symptoms or the eyes get worse I would take him to a veterinarian for an exam just to be sure it isn't something treatable.  Otherwise I wouldn't bother changing anything in his cage, though you may want to be a bit more careful when you have him out of the cage.  I hope that helps, good luck!
