pairing opposite sex rats

Question
Hi, I'm 27 and my bf and I have just gotten a 5 week old female rat, Chai, who we adore. She is spoiled with a very large cage and many toys. We have also decided that we want her to have a friend, but male. No we do not want babies! So we are prepared to spay and neuter, knowing this is also healthy for the rats, and Chai is at a possible breeding age already. However, we would like to introduce them at as young of age as possible, but who should we neuter/spay first and when/how? Is it wise to pair only a male and female together this way? Should they be introduced any differently than a same sex pair, and when/how would be best? Any other recommendations for pairing opposite sex rats would be a great help! We really want the best for Chai and her future friend. Thanx!

Answer
There are many many many benefits to altering both as opposed to just one (and less chance for error). I would speak with a vet and plan on having Chai spayed first; as I believe that the healing time for a doe is longer than a male. Then look into getting a male and having him altered when you can. By the time he's done healing (usually two weeks), Chai should be feeling back to her normal self and be ready for introductions. Sooner, the better; although some vets won't perform spays/neuters before certain ages.

If you are able to introduce them young (under 6 months) you shouldn't have any problems; and introduction is no different between male and female as it is female female or male male.

Good luck! And kudos for doing your homework!!
