Question
my rat had stopped going into her bed and was sitting in the corner of her cage shivering. we lifted her out and noticed her eyes were bloody and crusted over. she is an albino and has wee pink eyes. we bathed her and her eyes opened but this morning she was worse than ever and couldnt open her eyes. we bathed her again but shes not herself. our cars broken down and we dont have transport to take her to the vets. should i try and rush her in or is there anything i can do at all? we really love cracker so much. shes our first pet rat. we have had hampsters but never a rat. im wondering if my cat maybe pawed her through the bars but i dont think so as they dont usually bother with her. please please help

Answer
No, your cat didn't cause this.  The red discharge you see is porphyrin discharge, not blood.    It is produced by a gland behind the rats eyes and the gland produces more when the rat is stressed from illness.
It also can be found around the rats nose as well.

Please read my info on my site here and compare photos, tell me if this is what you see.

Is she eating, drinking, moving around and acting ok other than the discharge? If she is not eating and acting normal and just laying around, she may be very ill and will need a vet as soon as possible. If you need names of vets that treat rats please let me know your location and I will give you some names.
