Handling an old budgie

Question
Hi!

I have a 12 year old budgie named Desmond.  Desmond has always been an extremely timid bird, and before now never did anything without the permission of his mate BJ.  Unfortunately BJ died a year ago, and Des is somewhat lonely but very afraid of being handled.  He lacks the natural curiosity that BJ had, so it's very hard to lure him out of his cage with treats.  He is petrified of unfamiliar people and objects, but on the other hand seems happy singing in his cage and playing with his mirror.  Is there some way I can overcome Desmond's fear of unfamiliar situations and handle him, or is at his age is he better off left undisturbed in his routine?

Thanks for any help,
Haze

Answer
Hi Haze,

This is a hard to say... and ultimately you will need to make your own decision. It is stressful for a bird to be tamed down, and since he is getting older (although some parakeets live to be 14 or 15 years old), it will be even more stressful for him.

However, on the other hand- birds are very social creatures and he probably is lonely being by himself. However, buying him another bird friend will just leaving you back where you started once Desmond passes away. (The new bird then would need to be tamed). And it is a big commitment to get a younger bird, since they can live 10 to 15 years. I hope this helps- good luck in which ever you decide.
