Type of conure

Question
Greetings again, Maggie. Your answer was totally correct; my bird is indeed a green conure. I never saw pics of them to know, since they are not that common. The website was just what I needed. I do have a few more questions:

Is there any site where I might find my bird's ID tag number and info on the bird, ie: sex and date of birth?

How accurate is the pelvis in determining sex? I felt the pelvis on my green conure, and can definately feel a big gap between the pubic bones. I'd like to know, so that I can name her (him?) and use the correct pronoun.

Are there any good sites concerning bird behaviour? My bird seems to be acting a little odd, and I am just wondering if it might be a mating-type of behaviour or if it is the new environment (I rcently got her back from a friend who was taking care of her).

Thanks.

Christopher

Question -
Greetings Maggie. I am an expert here in the massage catagory, and I now need the advice of another expert. I have a conure, and have been trying to find out exactly what type it is. I was told, when it was given to me by a friend, that it was a green conure. The images of green conures do not match what my bird looks like, however. It actually looks more like a white eye conure, except that it does not have any red on it, anywhere. I understand that there are mutations in the colors sometimes; is this maybe the case here? I saw a term that I thought meant that the colors were muted (can't seem to find the term, or the page where I saw it, now); can this be why his color is different? I think that he is at least 5 years old, so it can't be immaturity, can it?

He was also neglected for a long time before I got him, and have made some progress with his personality, but are there any good tips or sites with tips for making them much more friendly and better trained?

ALso, he has an ID band. Are there any sites where that number would be registered, so that I cna find out some more information on him, like when he was born or his species?

Any information or links would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Christopher Hall

It sounds like your bird is a green conure to me... but it is hard for me to say unless I see a bird (and green conures are pretty rare in captivity).

You can check out this website though... it should help you properly identify your conure's species:

I hope this helps.

Answer
Hi Christopher,

To date... ID bands are typically just for the private use of breeders or individuals to help identify their birds. There is no "registration" or documentation available to my knowledge like there is for microchips.  Usually bands will list the state and year of hatch, but any other numbers listed on the band could mean just about anything. (it could be random, represent hatch order, etc... etc...)

As far as pelvis-sexing. I don't feel it is accurate at all. My avain vet (board certified) thought my conure and Pionus were both females. I got them both dna sexed. Both males.

Here are some great sites that have lots of articles concerning behavior and/or parrot care:

www.companionparrot.com
www.parrotchronicles.com
www.wingedwisdom.com

I hope this helps.
