scratches behind the ears

Question
My GP used to have nasty scratches behind his ears where he scratched himself all the time. | trimmed his claws and put little a little bit of vaseline onto the wounds and they did heal, but now they're back again! Should I do the same thing this time or is it more serious?

Answer
Siona --

I apologise for the delay in response.  AllExperts has been having some technical problems and they just fixed them, so I am now able to answer your questions.  I do apologise, though.  :)

It sounds as though you are doing the right thing for your guinea pig.  I would, however, use neosporin instead of vaseline on the cuts, to keep them from getting infected.  Also, I would check into WHY he is scratching so violently at his ears?  Does he have ear mites?  Another possibility would be dry skin, in which case you can just rub some vaseline onto the skin there (once it has healed) once a day.

I hope this is helpful.  I apologise for the delay again, and hopefully, should you have more questions, the response will be much faster.

Good luck!
