QuestionHi, it's Rachael.
About a week ago my guinea pig, Fee-bee had a baby. She is only 5 months old. I do not know how she got pregnant as there was no male guinea pig with her (when she was born there was her brother but they were separated after 4-5 weeks).
I do not know how it happened nor do I know what to do. When should I separate them? How do I tell if the baby is a boy or a girl? Is it normal for things like this to happen?
I am very worried as Fee-bee is only 5 months old.
How do you think she got pregnant? My friends, Alyina, Zeena and Martha are clue-less as to what happened. Please help me and e-mail me back as soon as possible.
Regards:
Rachael and friends
AnswerHi Rachael
It is possible for a female pig to become pregnant at a much earlier age than 5 months, even as young as 4-5 weeks.
To tell if the baby is a boy or girl gently press on the bottom of its tummy and if a little penis pops out you know its a boy. If it is a boy you should separate them ASAP to stop in-breeding.
As the pregnancy period lasts only about 7 weeks it cant be that her brother was the father. Therefore, it is a total mystery how fee-bee got pregnant. However, I can assure you that her being 5 months old is just about the best age for her to have a first baby, so please try not to worry.
If I can help further, please do not hesitate to reply.
