Question
I just bought a guinea pig today and i love him (his name is Elvis) but he doesnt seem to social.  He was very active at the store but now he barely moves. When i pet him he will sometimes make this strange low sort of throaty snorting noises and shakes a little. Is he just being shy or should i be worried?

Answer
Hi Caitlin,

Just give him time. It could take him up to 6 months to settle down properly. The throaty noise is most likely to be rumbling - a noise they usually make when they feel insecure, frightened or upset.

He could also be pretty lonely. Not only has he had a very major lifestyle change, but he is alone too. Human company is good, but nothing at all compares to the security, happiness and love of another guinea pig. They really do need company of their own kind.

As you bought your pig, I would suggest getting a vet check up as soon as possible. Pet store pigs are very often ill or mis-sexed, so it is a very good idea to get a check over to make sure he is in good health before doing much else.

Best Wishes,
