Question
Hello, mr Andy. Since I am a new owner of 2 beautiful abyssinian guinea pigs, I would like to know if I can sterelize my 3 months old male piggy. I live in Europe, the Balkans and in my country they are not very known. So I prefer to read or nevigate the internet in search of answers. Before I take it to the vet, what do you suggest prior of the procedure? Is it done by a local anesthesia? I believe a general one is life threatening. Can you prescribe any kind of drug used for local anesthesia and the quantity? (Your answer is decisive for me and the life of my piggy.) Thank you

Answer
Hi Jorida

Can I just check something with you. Do you need to get your male neutered as you also have a female?

If not, neutering is a procedure that doesnt male much difference to the character and behaviour of a male piggy.

I am not a vet so unfortunately I am unable to advise any pre-operation drugs but my understanding is that  neutering is done under general anaesthetic and therefore only advisable if absolutely neccesary.

Andy
