How much should a piggie eat?

Question
Thank you for your repsonse. Because of your understanding and obvious knowledge on the subject I would like to ask one more question. How much daily should a piggie eat? Is there a set requirement you can measure? I give her daily fresh veggies and also the vitamin C enriched generic guinea pig food, but i would like to know how much she should get. Is it ok to have some left over in the cage or should i put it away to keep it fresh at night? anthing I can use to measure how much food she should get daily would be great, and also how much more she should get if she is pregnant? Thanks!

-----Question-----
I recently got Millie, a beautiful 6 month old guinea pig from a pet shop. There was 3 of them all together in the cage and the pet shop owner had to look and see if she was a girl. ( she was, i checked myself also ) Her tummy is alittle bulgy but not too much. She also eats ALOT. ( is that normal? ) How can i tell if she is pregnant? I could wait it out, but is there any other way to tell? I've had her for about 3 weeks but we have bonded very well. If i find she is pregnant, is there any speacial care involved? How do I help her have a safe prenancy and delivery?

Hi Callie,

You are very fortunate, for there is usually some stress in finding out if a store-bought guinea pig is of the right age to have a healthy pregnancy and delivery.  Six months is in fact the most perfect age.

You may notice that your female seems more reluctant to touch, and eats considerably more than your other piggies.  Other than that, however, it may be difficult to tell if she is pregnant .  Until then, utmost care should be administered.

During her pregnancy, your guinea pig will need mental and physical stimulation, ample nutrients, and loving attention.  Daily excercise and toys are great, and having either her mate or a female friend keep her company is also a good idea.  Another guinea pig can stay in the cage all the way up to delivery.

As for nutrients, I suggest that you pick up vitamin supplemental droplets (from a local pet store) to put in her food and water every day.  Daily vegetables such as carrots and lettuce will also contribute to the healthiest pregnancy possible - just not too much, for that can upset her digestive system.  One or two lettuce leaves are sufficient.

Thank you for your question, I hope I have been of some help to you.  If you have any further questions in the duration of your pet's pregnancy, please do not hesitate to ask - I will be more than happy to help you out.  Pregnancies can be very exciting (especially when the pups begin to kick from inside the mom!).  Good luck with your guinea pigs (=

Answer
Hi Again,

There is no specific required measure of daily pellets for a guinea pig, simply fill a bowl bought from the small animal section of a pet store.  Guinea pig bowls and rabbit bowls can tend to be the same size.  Fill up the bowl whenever it is empty, which will happen more often when she is pregnant.  That way, you will be giving her all that she needs.  Leaving it in the cage overnight is also all right.
