Question
Hi. My guinea pig Drusilla gave birth on August 6th of this year. The baby is now 1 week and 4 days old and in the past few days he has been trying to mount Drusilla. When do they reach sexual maturity? What should I do if he keeps trying to mount her? I really don't want her getting pregnant again. Would it be safe to remove him early? Thank you!

Answer
Baby males reach sexual maturity at 4 weeks, I usually separate my male babies out at 3 weeks though and they are just fine. There is no chance of him getting her pregnant now, but I know it is frustrating and embarassing when that happens, you just have a male baby with a lot of hormones, also if you have a male pig near by he might have learned it from him. I wouldn't remove him now unless you want to finish off a little hand feeding, but it would be safe to remove him as early as 2 1/2 weeks. You might want to try to distract him with some little cat toys to play with or a bird toy with a bell at the end, just place it in the cage for them to play with, or put lots of hay and oats in the cage to eat, sometimes distraction works well for cases like this.
