Question
i have spent the last 2 hours looking for info on registering as a guinea pig breeder but so far had no luck please help me,also i have 5 guinea pigs all of which are scratching alot some even loosing hair and with scurfy skin,i have regulary treated them for mites is there anything else it could be.

Answer
Hi Kelly,

I am not a registered breeder, and the only suggestion I can make is checking out the ACBA's website  (American Cavy Breeders Association).

About your guinea pigs' scratching, it sounds like it could be a type of mites called mange mites - which can be lethal in guinea pigs.  A common treatment is ivermectin.  More information on ivermectin and photos & descriptions of guinea pigs with mange mites can be found at this helpful website:

You may also want to invest in "Guinea Pig Flea & Tick Spray" which is what I treated my guinea pigs with once.  It can be found at a local pet store.  Other than fleas and mange mites, I'm not too sure what else it could be and suggest consulting a veterinarian who is experienced with guinea pigs if you cannot find an effective way to treat your piggies.

Thank you for your question, I hope I have been of some help to you.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.  Good luck with your guinea pigs (=
