having 2 piggy

Question
Hi Jules,

We recently got an unaltered very young male piggy.  We are considering getting an additional piggy so that he isn't lonely.  Everything I've read really advised against 2 males.

1. Is it possible to find females who've been spayed or is it usually just the males that people get fixed?

2. If we can find one, is that a good match or do we really need to consider getting him neutered?

3. Do you have any idea how much that surgery costs?

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Alyssa,

First off you can have two males, as long the one you have now is under 1 1/2 years old. Then it would be alright to get another male for the one you have now. Though it depends on the temperament of the male you own.

Most people get females spayed, so you should have a hard time finding one, it is more common with females then it is with males. So being able to find a female that has been spayed should be fairly easy.

If you find one, then yes it would be a good match. I have heard of people putting a spayed female in with an unaltered male and it has worked out just fine. Plus males get along better with females anyways, so things will work out just fine and I don't think you need to consider getting him neutered as long as the female is spayed.

I don't have an idea how much the surgery would cost as it is different from vet to vet. From what I've read it is best to have an experience vet preform the surgery, as if you don't there can be some serious complications. But as you don't really need to consider this option with a spayed female, there is nothing for you to worry about.

Good luck to you,
    Take care now,
