New male guinea pig

Question
We just bought our very first guinea pig two days ago.   We have noticed that he stays in one corner of the cage quite a bit.  He is breathing ok or so it seems and we did just purchase an igloo for him.  Since putting the igloo in he is ALWAYS in there.  So i decided to take it out just to see if he will run around.  He doesn't make any noises only when we are holding him.   Is he ill??? I thought they were supposed to be a little more active.   He is drinking but I'm not sure if he is eating.  Thanks

Answer
Hello Elisa,

Guinea Pigs are cautious animals and sometimes it can take a while for them to adjust to their new lives. Give him some time to get used to you and your family and he will open up. Usually it takes a week or less but with some shyer pigs it can take longer. Make sure he is eating (if he isn't see a vet ASAP) and if he is, he's likely just fine. Just give him some time to adjust and I'm sure you will be best friends in no time. Congratulations on your new piggy and good luck!
