integrating my new guinea pig

Question
Hi there,

I have just brought a third male guinea pig - 6 weeks old. I currently have two other males who were brought together and are well bonded - they are about 5 and a half months old.

I am currently quarantining the new guinea pig and have him in a separate cage next to the other two so they are aware that there is a new member of the family - the new guinea has been quarantined for about a week now.

My problem is that Max, one of my other two guinea pigs, has become extremely hyperactive since he realised that another guinea pig was in the house. He is chattering (no agressively) all the time, he will not stay still for more then a couple of seconds and what is worrying me most is that he has now taken to doing things where he could hurt himself - when in his cage he is chewing the metal bars trying to get out, when he is out on the floor he is constantly trying to climb into the new guinea pigs cage (even though it is sealed) even if it means climbing really high on his house and then jumping onto the top of the new one's cage, I moved the toys away from the cage so now he just tries to jump from the floor or climb onto the thin ledge around the room, run along it and fall off. He has already fell off quite a height twice, luckily not hurting himself, but I cannot get him to calm down. As he is excited about the new member would it be worth me stopping the quarantine early and trying to integrate them on a neutral area? otherwise please could you let me know how to calm max down as I don't want him hurting himself - the other older guinea pig is perfectly calm and acting as he normally would.

Thanks
Michelle

Answer
Hello Michelle!
If you dont want your hyperactive cavy running around frantically and biting things i would just move the new cavy into a seperate room and quarantine him there until his time is up! I think that would ease both cavies minds! try talking to the hyper one in a sooting voice and petting him, and try to get his mind off the new pig!
Hope i helped a little, if you have any other questions feel free to ask!
