Question
QUESTION: Hi.
I think My 1 year guineapig got pregnant in the shop we bought her from but i am not sure. I was going to bring her to the vet but i cant, but my dad is a doctor and he has a urine pregnancy tester. So do you think I could collect some of her urine and test it and would her age be a problem for giving birth?
Also how can I tell how far she is off giving birth?
thanks maddy

ANSWER: Hi Maddy

I honestly dont know if a urine test would work but I suspect it wouldnt.

If she is pregnant and got pregnant after 8 months of age she may struggle to survive pregnancy as at this age, pelvic bones begin to fuse together.

Pregnancy lasts between 66-72 days so toward the end of this time you will begin to feel the movement of the babies and 24 hours before delivery the pelvic bones will part slightly.

QUESTION: What do i do if her pelvic bones have fused?
from maddy

ANSWER: Hi again

If the bones have fused and she is pregnant then you will need to get vetinary advice as to whether she will be able to deliver the babies or if a caesarian will be required.

QUESTION: I tried to conince mum to let me take her to the vet but she thinks it is a waist of money so i cant bring her to the vet. Also what is the chance of her suviving?

Answer
Hi

It all depends on how fused the bones are, if at all. If they are totally fused and she is pregnant then she will not survive.

I am a little upset to hear your mother's views on the care of your guinea pig and I hope that she will change her mind.
