Question
I've got 2 females one Sapphire and the other is ruby.they are the same age (nearly 2 years old).Sapphire is 32.85 grams and ruby is 32.20 grams i think it is over weight but i don't understand because i only feed 1/4 cup of guinea pig grains and a carrot and a hand full of veggies to share per day. is that to much? they just gain weight?

Answer
Hi Kathryn,

Most guinea pigs will reach their adult size at around six months of age. How big this is depends on their gender, their breed, and how big a litter they came from. They will gain weight again in their old age when they are less active (between 4 and 8 years). So if yours are putting on weight at 2 years, then you are probably feeding them too much. Unless of course there's a chance they are pregnant. Weigh them once a week and keep track. This is generally good practice because sudden weight loss or gain can indicate a health problem. If however you are simply concerned because one weighs more than the other, don't be; guinea pigs come in all shapes and sizes, just like humans.

I hope this helps and if you have any other questions, just ask.

Jenny.
