My Guinea Pig Rosie is Pregnant.........Again!

Question
Please help me, my guinea pig Rosie is pregnant for a second time and she is only 7 months old! The first time she was pregnant she only had one baby and we kept that baby because it was a girl and there was only one but she got pregnant again in the time it took to castrate my male guinea pig. I need to know how old they are before the babies can get the mother pregnant, how long I have to keep them before I can sell them, how long it is before I can separate them, if there is anything in particular I should feed the baby/babies and what I can do to help Rosie if she needs it! Please please can you try to help me, I am worried about all of my guinea pigs.

Answer
To answer your first couple questions.. Male guinea pigs can impregnate a female by the time they are four weeks old, but females cannot get pregnant until they around six weeks.

So, you should take the babies away from the mother when they are about four weeks old, and then separate the males from the females about a week after that just to be safe.  If the babies are separated from the mother at four weeks, you can get rid of them maybe a week after that, just so you can make sure that they are doing fine on their own.

You should feed the mother and the babies alfalfa hay mixed with timothy hay, and alfalfa based pellets.  The babies should get alfalfa/timothy hay and alfalfa based pellets until they are six months old, and the mother should only get them until she is done nursing.  You should also be giving her some extra veggies, as she is not only eating for herself anymore.

Good luck!
