New Hamster-- shy or sick?

Question
My daughter got her first hamster (syrian female) two days ago.  For the first night, the hamster was active, exploring the cage and spent hours on the wheel.  Since then, she has been huddled in her nesting spot and only moves when startled (we're trying not to) or new food is put in dish down below.  How long will it take her to adjust and start exploring?  I haven't seen her go near her water bottle so I'm getting worried.

Answer
Hi Christina,

This is normal behavior. I would suggest talking to your hamster and holding her often. Give her a chance to get to know you and your daughter. It could take a couple of weeks for her to get used to you. When putting her back in her cage, set her near the water bottle and see if she will drink. Also check the water bottle in the morning to see if it has gone down any. Hamsters are most active at night and tend to drink more then.
