Question
Can I put two male Gerbils (from different pet stores) in the same cage and prevent them from fighting? If so, how?

Answer
Dear Jeff,
thank you for your question.
You have to introduce them slowly to each other and it works best with young gerbils or with one older and a young gerbil. But two older gerbils can be introduced to each other, too, although it may take longer.

Divide a cage into two parts so that the gerbil can see and smell, but not reach each other (which means two dividers that are about 1/2 inch apart). Switch sides every day or every other day so that they will get used to the smell of the other gerbil. When they stop showing agression toward each other (may take a few weeks or only one week), you can introduce them on neutral territory like the bathtub or another cage, for half an hour or so.
When they are peaceful (some fighting is okay), put them into a small kritter keeper or a really small cage. They have to stay there for 1-3 days and when they get along in there (again, some fighting and squeaking is normal), they can move into their cage. The cage must be cleaned, vinegar and hot water works very well, and they mustn't have a house or any toys. Just fresh bedding, hay and the sand bath is enough. Add a house after one or two days and then one toy every two days or so. If they start to fight seriously again, you have to start over from the beginning. It may work better when they are kept alone for a week or so so that they really miss the company of another gerbil.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer
