Question
QUESTION: I got my Syrian male hamster yesterday and it keeps making random squeaking/squealing noises. I tried picking it up earlier but it just rolled over and made a loud squealing noise. When i put my hand inside the cage, the hamster starts smelling it and im scared it will bite me, but other times when i put my hand in, the hamster runs away.
help please!

ANSWER: Dear Elana,
thank you for your question.
I think that your hamster is scared of you right now. He needs time to get used to you and his new home, please be patient with him. Put your hand in the cage to let him come and investigate it, but don't try to hold him right now. When he's comfortable with your hand being in the cage, you can try to touch him or move him around when he's sitting on your hand. Offering treats on your palm will help with the taming process.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer

QUESTION: But what if i place my hand inside the cage, he smells it and bites it because he has nearly done that before. He has a habit of biting people's fingers through the cage bars too. Thank you for your help. :)

Answer
Biting through the cage bars is nprmal, even very tame animals may do that, especially when they are fed through the bars.
To make him get used to your smell before putting your hand in the cage, youc an give him old socks or pieces of a t-shirt you slept in, it should be made of cotton (safe when chewed).
It's very unusual that hamsters really bite, they sometimes give a food-bite: they want to test if your hand is edible. Those bites are not very painful and the hamster usually won't do it again (unless you have handled his food right before handling him).
