Hamsters travelling

Question
Hi Tammy

in three weeks time I am travelling back from Wales to Yorkshire - around 3 hours travelling.  I am hoping to take with me my 4 Robo hamsters.  They have a special dwarf hamster cage so they will not roll around and I am hoping to travel during the day while they are less active - are Hamsters ok for travelling as I have never done this before and want to make it as stress free for them - and me!

Many thanks

Julie

Answer
Hi Julie,

Your Hamters will be absolutely fine travelling.

I have picked up most of my Roborovskis from many miles away.

I recently brought a breeding colony consisting of 4 adult Roborovskis, 1 Male and 3 Females, each with their own 2 foot glass tank.  The four tanks were squeezed into my tiny KA and then we drove the three hour journey home.

They probably wont sleep much but make sure the food and water containers are secured properly and take out anything else which may slide onto the hamsters and injure them.

I have since found out that the four hamsetrs do get along and if i had known this before starting the journey i would have put them all in the same cage.  It is best for them to travel together as they bond more closely because they do get a little scared during the journey and can comfort each other.

I once had to pick up three Roborovskis - a mother and two babies.  When i got there, the lady gave me them in a tiny cardboard box.  It was quite late and we had another three hours drive home so we decided to stay overnight in a hotel.

I didnt want to leave them in the tiny box so i let them out in the hotel bath and thats where they stayed all night!!  (very naughty i know, lol!) but they were fine.

Hamsters adapt very well to new surroundings so as long as they have enough food and water they should be fine.

I think the three of them enjoyed their massive cage for one night!!

Please let me know how you get on and if you need any further info.

Regards,

Tammy
